Blood work and lab tests, with a provider who explains the results
A blood test only helps if someone tells you what it means. At Caring Hearts, your provider orders the right tests, goes over the numbers with you, and tells you what to do next. In Creole, French, Spanish or English.
What we check
[CONFIRM: which tests are drawn in the office, which are sent to an outside lab, and whether this differs by office]
- Cholesterol. Your heart risk, in a few numbers.
- Blood sugar and A1C. Checks for diabetes and shows how well it's controlled.
- Thyroid. For tiredness, weight changes or feeling cold all the time.
- Complete blood count. Checks for anemia, infection and more.
- Kidney and liver. Important if you take daily medicine.
- EKG. A quick, painless check of your heart rhythm.
- Pre-employment and school tests when a form asks for them.
How it works
- 01See your provider. Blood work starts with a visit, so we order the tests you actually need.
- 02Get your blood drawn. [IN OFFICE or AT A NEARBY LAB: confirm]
- 03Go over your results. Your provider calls you or sees you again to explain them. No guessing from a printout.
Looking for a blood doctor?
If you searched for a "blood doctor," you may mean one of two things.
If you need blood work, that's us. Your family provider orders it, reads it and follows up.
If you need a hematologist (a specialist in blood disorders like sickle cell disease or a bleeding problem), we're a family practice, not a hematology office. We'll check your blood work first, and if you need a specialist we'll refer you and stay part of your care.
Questions patients ask us
Do I need to fast before my blood work?
Sometimes. Cholesterol and blood sugar tests often need 8 to 12 hours without food. Water is fine. We'll tell you when you book.
Can I just walk in for blood work?
Call first. Most lab work needs an order from your provider, and we'll set that up for you.
How long until I get my results?
[CONFIRM typical turnaround] Your provider will reach out once they're in.
Does insurance cover blood work?
Most plans cover routine blood work ordered by your provider, including Medicare and Medicaid. Call us and we'll check your plan.
Can you explain my results in Creole?
Yes. Ask for a Creole-speaking provider when you book.
